Where Your Coffee Actually Comes From...

Discover the regions, elevations, flavors, and stories behind the beans that make Cranky Cup… well, Cranky Cup.

Coffee is shaped by place. Soil, altitude, climate, and tradition all influence what ends up in your cup. The origin notes below highlight the unique flavors and growing conditions from some of the world’s most respected coffee regions—South America to East Africa, Central America to the Pacific Islands.

Brazil
Nutty. Chocolatey. Smooth. That’s Brazil in a cup. Grown about 3,600 feet up in São Paulo, this coffee is a dark roast darling and a go-to for espresso lovers. It also sneaks into cold brew blends, lending a malty, satisfying body. Brazil sits below Colombia and east of Peru in South America, and happens to be the planet’s largest coffee producer.

Burundi
Bright mandarin, semi-sweet chocolate, caramel, and a body so heavy it practically sits in the cup with you. That’s Burundi. These Bourbon beans grow at over 5,700 feet, delivering bold sweetness and a long, bright finish. Burundi itself rests in East Africa’s Great Lakes region, tucked between Rwanda, Congo, and Tanzania.

Cameroon
Think chocolate, caramel, molasses, and a blackberry twist—all riding on a rich, heavy body. That’s Cameroon’s gift from the slopes of Mount Kilum, 7,200 feet high. With bees buzzing (this place is famous for white honey), pollination is top-notch. Coffee first arrived here from Jamaica’s Blue Mountains in the early 1900s, and the shade-grown plants—often under banana trees—have thrived ever since. Cameroon sits in central Africa, bordered by Nigeria to the north and the Gulf of Guinea to the west.

Colombia
Toffee and apples on a fairly hefty body—that’s Colombia in your mug. Beans grow in the Antioquia and Calda regions at 3,800–4,400 feet. Colombia anchors the northern tip of South America, snuggled between Ecuador and Venezuela.

Nicaragua
Sweet citrus, caramel, and just enough milk chocolate to keep things interesting. These beans grow at 4,900 feet in the northern Matagalpa region, blending Arabica varieties—Caturra, Catuai, and Maragogipe—for a flavor that stands out. Nicaragua sits in Central America, right below Honduras and El Salvador, with Colombia waiting further south as the gateway to South America.

Peru
Chocolate, caramel, almond, raisin, and a weighty body—Peru’s beans don’t hold back. Grown at 6,200 feet in the Huánuco province (once home to the Inca Empire), the climate swings warm by day and cool at night, averaging a perfect 68°F for coffee. Peru sits on South America’s west coast, below Colombia, beside Brazil, and above Bolivia.

Papua New Guinea
Mandarin orange, caramel, chocolate, and a heavy body—that’s PNG coffee. These beans thrive at 5,300 feet in the Eastern Highlands, surrounded by rugged mountains and valleys, some stretching beyond 12,000 feet. Coffee from Papua New Guinea has earned its own nickname—“PNG”—for good reason. The island nation sits in the southwest Pacific, just north of Australia.

Rwanda
Cherries, nectarines, black currant—fruit-forward and lively. Rwanda’s beans grow at 6,200 feet in the western province near Lake Kivu, an area also known for mountain gorillas. While the cup is Arabica, Robusta coffee also grows here. Rwanda rests in East Africa, bordered by Uganda to the north, Burundi to the south, Congo to the west, and Tanzania/Kenya to the east.

Costa Rica
Raisins, walnuts, and green apples—this is balance in a cup. Grown nearly 6,000 feet up in the Tarrazú region (famous for the country’s best beans), these Arabica varieties—Caturra and Catuai—deliver a clean, medium-bodied brew. Head west and you’ll hit the Dota region, also coffee royalty. Costa Rica itself sits in Central America, hugged by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south, the Caribbean to the east, and the Pacific to the west.

El Salvador
Nutty, chocolatey, kissed with brown sugar and full-bodied. This coffee is raised at about 3,600 feet in the Apaneca Mountains, where Pacas, Caturra, and Bourbon varieties thrive in shade from surrounding fruit trees. Small country, big flavor. El Salvador is in Central America, with Guatemala on the northwest side, Honduras to the northeast, and Nicaragua just south.

Honduras
Caramel, red fruit, and chocolate notes—all from beans rooted at 4,500 feet in the Intibucá Department of the Western Highlands. The land is lush, with pine and oak on the slopes and valleys always green from rich tropical soils. Honduras sits in Central America, bordered by Guatemala and Belize to the north, with El Salvador and Nicaragua further south.

Laos
Bold, earthy, and a little smoky—tasting like tobacco and herbs. These beans are grown at 3,300 feet, just south of the Salavan region, near the top of a waterfall (yep, really). Unlike some other origins, Laos beans bring consistent flavor harvest after harvest, year after year. Laos is landlocked in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

Tanzania

Chocolate, cherries, and caramel with a smooth, balanced body. These beans grow about 5,900 feet up in the Mbeya highlands, where coffee first arrived courtesy of the French in the 1800s, then expanded with plants from India in the 1920s. Sitting just below the equator, Tanzania offers growing conditions a lot like Brazil or Peru. The country rests in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda and Congo to the west, the Indian Ocean to the east, Kenya and Burundi up north, and Mozambique down south. Ingredients: 100% Arabica Coffee.

Uganda

Think chocolate, raisins, and crisp green apple—all grown on the slopes of Mount Elgon, a volcano straddling the Uganda–Kenya border. At nearly 5,900 feet, the land is rich with rainforests, valleys of orchids, baboons, blue monkeys, and over 300 bird species. Coffee here has wild character, shaped by its rainforest roots. Uganda sits in East Africa, with Kenya to the east, Rwanda south, South Sudan north, and Congo west.
